I made a clip in Session and then copy/pasted it into Arrangement. So I just tested this out and I dont think it works. I’d say do your research, then, but choose on what’s right for you, not the initial outlay. Edit the clip in Session, drag the clip into arrangement, and copy/paste/duplicate using keyboard shortcuts and arrow keys. In all honesty though, it doesn’t work out an awful lot cheaper, and getting your software right at the beginning is, I’d suggest, more important than the price (which you’ll have forgotten about a year into your production career). It also has a clip view for the same type of jamming. Although the All Plugins Bundle is just that bit more in comparison to Ableton Live Suite, in all other areas FL wins on price.

199 for a pro-level piece of software is a bargain. No wonder most DJ/producers produce with Ableton Live, then, but there is an alternative, namely relative newcomer Bitwig Studio. It doesn’t make sense, but FL Studio is insanely good value for money, especially for the Producer Edition. Choosing from samples, one-shots, Midi clips, drum loops, rhythm-locked effects and much more, it is possible to endlessly “jam” variations of sounds in a way that just isn’t possible with most music production software, that demands structure from the beginning.Īlso, this – especially with Ableton Link, which can easily sync you up to your DJ software, for instance – is a great way of playing live, keeping things fluid rather than rigid, and blurring the lines between DJing and production. The reason many DJ/producers love Ableton Live is the way, in Clip view, you can sync items easily, matching their BPMs on the fly – a little like the “sync” button on a DJ controller, but across potentially hundreds of little snippets. So no, you don’t have to shell out for Ableton Live 9 Suite to start making music, not at all. Logic, as you say, is incredible software. Many top DJs and producers have used FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) to have number one hit tunes.

You could start with GarageBand, for free with OSX. Over on the Digital DJ Tips forum, Sy Swint asks: “I want to learn how to produce but I’m not sure which digital audio workstation to buy? I’m leaning towards Ableton but it is twice the price of some other, seemingly professional, DAWs like Logic Pro. Is Ableton Live 9 worth the higher price tag?” Digital DJ Tips says: drag the first assignment to another parameter and then edit the cc number by typing (or don't type if you want the same cc to control several parameters).įor the same reason i'd like to be able to save midi assignements to an effect in a preset, so i can use it wit ha specific sensor setting spontaneously (saving to the template or to a set is restricting).Īn other thing came to me while playing with resonator: you can actually use many effects in a quite tonal way, and you can actually assign midi note ranges to the pitch control of resonator to use it melodically.Ableton Live 9 is great software because of the ability to jam with clips and scenes, but this app – Bitwig Studio – is an alternative. That's why i'd just love to be able to copy and edit assignements inside the manager, like say, one sensor gives me cc1 on channel 3, the next cc2 - instead of going to max, isolate the sensor, switch to live, choose the parameter to control, tickle the sensor, close the manager, go to max, isolate the next sensor. So i' m constantly switching back and forth between the two programs. But this sometimes makes assigning controls awkward, like when you use sensor interfaces, where it can be hard to send just one isolated cc. I' ve seen some posts concerning the midi assignement manager - i am using max to make midi do, what live doesn't support directly.
